Hey man, Time magazine has a special thing out called Mind, its a really good read ( I read it at work on my late shifts) it talks about this like this and theories of what consciousness really is ,it really boggles the mind :D

Yeah, there are four levels of mind based on brain wave frequency cycles
Delta --0-10
Thetha -7-14
Alpha -- 14 -20
Beta -- 20 and above
So when we are in this alpha level of mind,we have better access to our subconscious mind which helps us to produce better ideas and have a controlled sense of awareness
